Once they blew up a second charge on the Nile side of the line would blow the dam keeping tire river at bay, and water would flood in, turning the entrenchments into an impassable moat. All the British player needed was to roll anything but “1”.

There are other napoleonic rules that enable you to fight Austerlitz in 3 hours with 200 6mm figures.....go ahead, enjoy...but is that napoleonic wargaming?
- Jan 16, 2015 · First off, we have Black Powder (Warlord Games, 2009). BP is an odd beast. Co-authored by Rick Priestley, one of the co-authors of the original Warhammer Fantasy Battle in 1983 and the creator of the original Rogue Trader rules, it is meant to be the next iteration of the Warmaster system of 10mm fantasy rules, adapted for use in the black powder era, namely 1700-1900.
- Yeah, all they are all being based for Up the Nile as I get them painted. I just read through the rules once and thought "wow!". These are for me. Simple yet very evocative of the Anglo Mahdist War in the Sudan. I prefer the emphasis being put ion friction and attrition rather than just removing casualties so the rules were right up my street.
- Next up will be rebasing more of the Brits, as well as organising the Mahdist Ansar infantry. At some point I’ll need to sort out things for British cavalry, along with the Egyptian infantry (and the Naval Brigade, the Indian troops, the Nile Arabs etc. and of course the steam ships…) Well, back to the rules.

Here are just a few: he was a founding member of Wargame Developments, the author of many books on military subjects, a TV star ('Game of War' in the late 1990s) and more recently ran an number of Special Interest days at IWM Duxford.

Regarding the figures, quite a few have been repainted (Grey coated 42nd Highlanders now have red coats for Tel-el-Kebir) and/or converted (dead Hadendoa).

- During the 1884-85 campaign most Egyptian troops were used to garrison the Egypt-Sudan frontier, but in a wargames campaign it's certainly feasible to use some in the field. The Sudan rules I have uses cards to randomly generate the number of Mahdist forces appearing on the table.

After a few readings I have made the concrete decision to stick with Up the Nile. It just seems that have that Boys Own X-factor that is missing in quite a few rule sets for the Sudan.

This is the board game version of my favourite set of 'wind and water' naval wargame rules called Ship of the Line by the late S. Craig Taylor. The board game uses hexes whilst the original rules used squares.

My first and abiding interest has been the Napoleonic period, which at first meant that figure conversion was the only option; and very messy it was too.
